The Nairobi Rivers Commission (NRC) was established by H.E. The President of the Republic of Kenya, vide the Kenya Gazette Notice no. 13907 of 25th October, 2024 and aligning its functions under the Executive Office of the Deputy President.
The Commission emerged as a response to the pressing need to address the deteriorating state of the rivers within the Nairobi Basin, which were heavily polluted and degraded through time due to various factors, including urbanization, industrial activities, and inadequate waste management practices. Recognizing the critical importance of reclaiming these rivers as vital ecosystems and resources for the city, NRC was established to spearhead coordinated efforts towards their restoration and revitalization.
NRC has adopted a multi-sectoral approach to river basin management, drawing upon expertise from environmental agencies, local authorities, community groups, and civil society organizations. Its mandate encompasses a broad spectrum of activities, including catchment protection, riparian restoration, waste management, and community engagement initiatives, all aimed at reversing the ecological degradation of Nairobi's rivers and promoting sustainable water resource management practices.
The Commission operates on principles of collaboration, innovation, and environmental stewardship, guided by a vision of transforming the Nairobi rivers into vibrant and thriving ecosystems that support biodiversity, provide clean water, and enhance the quality of life for all residents.
